Should i purchase these Zoanthids under these conditions?
Hello fellow reef keepers.
I currently have a 10 gallon nano with a clownfish, a mushroom frag, 10lbs of live rock and sand. My lighting is 2 10WATT power compacts 10K 50/50. My flow comes from a koralia nano.
Well, I was wondering, I have seen some pink zoanthids in my LFS that would be wonderful in my tank. The problem is that they are under metal halide lighting, and I am afraid of purchasing them because of the possible shock. Is my lighting sufficient for these zoanthids, I do not want them to die? I plan to make this a soft coral dominated tank.
I would like as much information as possible, not just a link.

Zoanthids are generally quite easy to keep – when I got my button and clove zoanthids they were moved from under a 6 foot 9X95watt T5 fixture to a 24watt 50/50 like yours, as with all corals at first they were a bit slow to open, but they thrived and grew!
What I do personally when moving corals from a HO light to a much lower lighting is to place them as high as possible in the tank – mine were at the very top of the tank only a few inches from the lights.
After a few weeks, frags were moved lower and lower, they thrived.
It is possible alright, and think about it, in your LFS the corals are normally displayed in a very large open top tank – being moved to a 10g would mean they are possibly still getting the same light exposure, only the wattage is a lot lower. Generally halides must be kept at least 12inches from the water top – My 2x150w halides over my 62gallon are 15 inches away.
Zoanthids are low light corals, and while they do prefer a medium flow, any sort of lighting will do, if you’re worried, place them near the top of the tank just away from the main flow of the powerhead.
My clove zoanthid polyps are right beside where the main powerhead flow is, so they do get some sort of flow, but not the main burst of it.
