is it possible to grow a plant using a flourecent light bulb or a 100 watt light bulb???
Yes, there are many types of 100w and Florescent bulbs on the market which will grow plants very well, it just depends on the type of plant you are trying to grow. Plants thrive given the right conditions in sunlight. To provide a plant with an “artificial” light source which mimics the sun is extremely difficult, if not impossible. However, there are many plants which are well suited to indoor lights. For example standard 4′ fluorescent bulbs are great for African Violets
There have been considerable advances in indoor grow lamps over the last decade, especially the last 3-5 yrs. There has been a great advance in fluorescents lights such as the newer high output T-5 type of ballast and bulb. They are much more efficient, better spectral range (actually best of any bulb of any type), and one 2′ bulb emits more than double the lumen’s as a standard 4′ long T-12, the type we all know from homes and offices. T-5 bulbs are very easy to recognize because the bulb itself is “thin” about an inch. They do not fit into a standard fluorescent fixtures. You would need a T-5 lamp + reflector/ballast combo. This type of lamp can be kept very close to the plant canopy because they produce little heat and alone can grow fruiting and flowering plants, such as peppers, cherry tomatoes, and most houseplants.
Incandescent 100w bulbs should not be used for plant growth, even “plant-lights” do not really grow plants, they do help the appearance of the plant to the human eye, but I would steer clear of them. They are also very inefficient and produce a lot of heat. If they were placed close enough to a plant to provide it benefit, the bulb would burn the plant.
The other option, if you want to grow a larger prolific plant that will produce fruit and veggies, etc.. you will need to “bite the bullet” and spend the money on a HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamp, ballast, and hood/reflector. They have wattages from 50 to 1500w. There are two general types of HID’s, Metal Halide (MH) and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps. MH bulbs emit a daylight spectrum, imitating Spring to Mid-summer light, around 6.5K. HPS bulbs produce light mostly in the red to yellow spectrum around 3K to 4K, like an Autumn or Fall sun. If you decide to go the HID route there are a few things to consider. MH setups are the best to go with if you just want to buy a one lamp system, the majority of plants will grow faster, lusher and bigger. They can be used to supplement daylight during winter’s short day length by having the lamps on 2-4 hrs. in the AM before/during sunrise, and at dusk for 2-4 hrs. to reduce electrical cost (they also can cure S.A.D.) They will help plants do better with all around growth from a vegetable to a foliage plant or blooming plant. HPS lamps are more designed for to induce and increase flowering in plants. Alone, without other supplemental sunlight or a fluorescent or MH they will generally stress plants, and HPS are hotter than a MH bulb, and not pleasing to the human eye. If you goal is to have great peppers, tomatoes, and flowers… and you don’t mind spending a lot of money, then use MH to grow lush green growth to a canopy size which will support the new fruit/flower you are growing, Later use a combination of both MH and HPS or HPS alone to make sure your plants know it’s time to enter their reproductive phase, In nature at the end of summer, many plants use their energy to make sure their genetics are passed on, by flowering, fruiting, and trying to spread their seeds using many different methods.
