Spirulina..?
So spirulina is algae based i am led to believe so if i were to add this to water finely crushed and mix it up and put gravel from my tank in it will this make the algae grow faster??if i put it under direct sunlight or any light that is?
i have a pleco and some snails and want them to be able to have some food if i leave for a few days plus i heard its good for fish to have to eat if gone as well…ill be gone for a week and although ppl say tht fish can go a week without eating i dont wanna risk it and i dont have the cash to buy an automatic feeder right now and i dont have someone to feed my fish for me
will algae increase the rate that snails multiply?
and will it be beneficial to guppy molly and platy fry?

Well… I guess you are right to a certain degree.
Spirulina is a form of plankton. At least, that’s what the health stores tell me. It is not the same algae that you get out of a tank, however. The stuff in those pellets? It’s a mixture of spirulina with corn meal and other proteins and chemicals to keep the stuff fresh.
If you want to encourage algae, you would need to:
1. Keep the lights on at all times. This is not cool for your fish, however, unless your tank offers cover. The excessive light, though, will inspire the algae to keep going.
2. There are tablets they sell that will encourage the algae to grow.
3. Let the tank build in nitrates (this can be encouraged with the food dropping). This is not really a good thing. Why? For one thing, it’ll be a good amount of nitrates to keep the tank growing a significant amount of algae for the fish to eat. This means your tank has to be gross. You don’t want to leave your fish in gross water, do you?
Honestly, if you’re really this worried, then get a vacation feeder block, or get a friend to housesit once every two days for the little ones. Feeding them from tank algae isn’t too good and it won’t be enough to feed a pleco most of the time unless it’s tiny (and even so… ew). The pleco will love the vacation feeder. Your snails will pick at it. You would need to buy 20 of them to equal a battery operated feeder at least.
