Do i need a ballast and starter to run a High Pressure Sodium bulb? If so why, what happens if used without?
I ignorantly bought a HPS bulb thinking I’d experiment with a little indoor gardening without doing all my homework and am feelings foolish. What is a ballast and why does it need a starter? Can I use the bulb without them or will it blow up or something? Aware HID lights are dangerous i figured i should fish for more info before possibly making another mistake.
You need a ballast. There is a start circuit to heat up the sodium metal, but a ballast to limit current through the lamp once the gas begins conducting. Without the ballast if you somehow did get the light going it would explode.
You better be growing legal stuff, if the man sees you buying HID lighting and using indoors it will attract all the wrong attention. If you buy mail order or internet they will also have your name.
The heat from HID is visible at night from helicopters, that’s why people are switching to LEDs.
