How can I wire a 120 volt ceiling light so it will work in a house wired for 12 volt lighting?
Two ways will get the job done for you. Depending on your source of power, be it battery or generator, you choose.
1: If you are on a generator, you can buy 12v bulbs that will screw into your fixture. If the fixture is wired to a switch, that will turn the light on and off as you like it.
2: If you are on a battery power source, the screw in lamps will draw a lot of current and drain your batteries rather quickly. In that case, you may consider going to an RV parts store and look at some of the fixtures they have for sale. Fluorescent fixtures use less power than the incandescent lights. You may find some of these that will fill the bill for your place. (You can make use of previously used 12v fixtures from an old camper or trailer if you can find one.)
Either of these solutions will work depending on how much light you need and what you have for a source of 12 volt current. Remember, the farther you run 12v wiring, the larger the wire size needs to be so that you don’t drop the voltage.
