What is growing on my live rock (pics)?
There are a ton of small ( 5mm – 10mm wide) Sponge looking things popping up in colonies on my live rock where the Light hits the most. They are solid white, and have a hollow core. They have a feather duster looking protrusion coming from the tip of the main body. The Fan looking part is shaped like a Cone. Here is the best picture I could get. It’s growing like a parasite and i’m getting worried. Any ideas on what this is would be greatly appreciated.
It is pineapple sponge. They are generally harmless filter feeders.
If you keep nice water quality will little excess nutrients, they should not be an issue. Their numbers will stay small adn they will not hurt a thing.
In an neglected tank that gets few water changes and has no skimmer, they can quickly multiply and be a nuisance. I’ve seen tanks where they took over and clogged the filters and powerheads. These are always in the systems where people never change the water and have poor filtration.
I have some in most tanks, and they have never been a problem. They do not get very big at all, and should not get too much larger than what you are seeing.
If they do start to multiply out of control, check your nitrates and phosphates, and take steps to reduce them if you get a reading., including more water changes, potentially a phosphate and/or nitrate reactor, a skimmer, feed less, etc.
