do i need to use an HPS light with LED lights?
im growing indoors and i was wondering if it was necessary to use a high pressure sodium light with my LED panels.
HPS give a large amount of light for the cost of operation. I am not familiar with LED panels, but I would be skeptical as to the amount of light they would produce versus the amount of light plants need for growth.
HPS will be a limited range of the daylight spectrum, but your plants should not show deficiencies from them. White LEDs i believe are a much narrower band of the spectrum (bluish), I suggest you investigate if they can be daylight balanced by mixing in colored LEDs in the panels, or see if they have been manufactured to be broad spectrum LEDs (again, I am not familiar with them).
Be sure to research your plants to see if they need a rest period (a fake night) or if they are photosensitive, meaning they need shorter “days” (a fake autumn) to trigger fruit or veggie production. A timer may be necessary for these situations. You may care to invest in surge protection with a battery backup, so that your timer spikes don’t make the watchful authorities think that your winter tomatoes are maybe marijuana and kick down your door at 3 am some night to find out they are mistaken.
