What is the best tropical plant fertiliser?
I have a low-tech tank with a layer of aquatic soil covered in gravel. I have 15W of light (T8) over 35l of water and I have ludwigia repens, hygrophila rosae, crypts, a java fern, a tiny bit of water sprite and pygmy chain swords growing in it. I have been using tetra plantamin but the bottle is running out and I was wondering what is the best fertiliser to use, since I can now get a new brand.
I do not want to use CO2 as I don’t want the hassle, but would consider using a liquid carbon supplement as well, but I have heard that crypts do not like this, is this true as well?
Finally my ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are barely noticiable in the tank, does this mean I should add some N fertaliser as well, or add more fish (current inhabitants are 8 ember tetras and 4 amano shrimp)? Or is it OK with these reading pretty much nil?

The honest answer would be that it doesn’t really matter. Light dictates how much CO2 and nutrients the plants will use, and in a low-light tank like yours, they generally won’t need anything more than what is already provided to them by your water source and natural processes within the aquarium. The other thing is that commercial liquid fertilizers are generally about 97% water. There’s very little actual nutrients contained in the bottle, so the differences between each brand is actually very small in comparison. If you want to “cover all your bases” though, then Seachem Flourish would be the one I’d suggest, since it contains a good diversity of various nutrients.
Crypts are not susceptible to liquid CO2 supplements, though a few other plants are – most notably Vallisneria and Anacharis.
