How much is a light for a coral/reef tank?
Hi, I’m starting my 2nd 20gal saltwater aquarium, and I was thinking of growing corals. But I was wondering. How much would a reef/coral light be for a 20gal aquarium? And are there some corals that only need the light? I’m asking cause I’m a beginner, and I want to start off with the easiest possible corals. And I don’t wanna go through all that buffer stuff and allllll that testing :p Thanks!
Irregardless if you have corals or not you still need to get your water to the proper Ph and you still need to test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, etc. (I still test weekly for all of these in all of my tanks, Irregardless.) Better to recognize a problem and attempt to prevent it rather then notice it after things start to die. Alot depends what type of light you plan on buying. Powercompacts will be cheaper then T-5 VHOS, which are cheaper then metal halides and LED’s. Powercompacts are a little outdated as T-5′s have pretty much taken their place. Also the extra money you spend on a t-5 fixture you will save when you have to buy bulbs, as powercompact bulbs are a little more expensive then t-5s. I would recommend a good t-5 VHO fixture. This will allow you to keep all your soft easier corals such as mushrooms, polyps, etc. which don’t require much light and are easier to care for. Also later on it will also allow you to add some lower to mid-level LPS if you wanted too and try your hand with those. SPS, clams, some anemones, I also wouldn’t attempt your higher level LPS, but it is possible if you place them very high, really anything which require high lighting, you wont be able to keep. Most of these are only possible under good metal halide lighting or multiple LED fixtures. Halide and LED lighting systems for a 20 gallon will be around $500 by themselves. A good t-5 fixture will most likely run around $200-$250 for that size tank, however it really all depends on what you want specifically.
