can i use hydroponic ph up/down to adjust the ph in soil ?
id like to adjust the ph of my soil based garden but it seems they dont make a product for it.. i was wondering if i could use hydroponic up and down mixed in with the water that id be feeding my plants ? it would be easier then adding limestone etc…
From my classes as a Master Gardener and various soils classes in school, it is next to impossible to change the pH of soil from say acidic to alkaline or vice versa. Minor increases or decreases are possible, but still difficult
Soil being defined as the medium to grow plants, as in the soil in your back or front yard. The reason for this is because soil pH is governed by the parent material of the area.
Lets assume you have an alkaline soil. You would have to use large quantities of hydroponic down or sulfur (to make a soil more acidic). The effects of which would be temporary because of the ‘push’ from the parent (alkaline) material.
For outdoors, you would have to create a section that is sealed off from the existing soil and use a neutral growing medium or a growing medium that has the pH you require.
It is possible, but given the amount of resources necessary and the overall temporary affect, it may be an exercise in futility.
