why would a 250w. metal halied bulb be brighter than a 400w. metal halied bulb when put into a 400 w. fixture?
This 250 watt bulb has been in for 9 mos. and has yet to blow, Yet it is distinctively brighter than the 400 watt bulbs around it.
The light output depends mainly on the current; the voltage on the different types will be about the same as they are discharge lamps (i.e. gas plasma, not filament). The 250W one will be running at the current (governed by the control gear) intended for the 400W type. It is therefore considerably overdriven – so don’t get too close!
