Help with wire heat ratings.?
I am wiring a 400 watt Metal Halide lamp. It does not come with a wall plug and cord, so i have to attach my own to its contacts. It says that it requires a cord with a minimum heat rating of 90 degrees celsius, and I used one that was 75 celsius. It turned on, and i ran it for 5 minutes without catastrophic failure. Will this be safe? (I certainly don’t want a fire burning down my whole house). The light had three voltage options (240V, 208V, and 120V) and I used the 120V because im plugging into a wall outlet. the cord will be about 4 feet long.
I will be plugging this cord into a power strip. Will this work or will it overload the power strip since it needs such a high capacity for wire heat in the first place?
You should replace the cord with a minimum heat rating of 90 celsius just to be safe. The higher heat rating of the power cord adds to the safety factor. The 400 watt Metal Halide lamp will generate quite a bit of heat and thus the manufacturer is requiring a higher heat rating.
If you don’t overload the power strip it will be fine. The high heat capacity for the power cord only matters near the heat source, the 400 watt Halide lamp.
