LED light with b/w film Holga leave underexposed images?[pic]?
Hi photo friends,
A friend of mine shot a roll of 400 (120 medium formet) ASA film in a Holga. He used an “LED light” which I’m assuming is one of those continuous light source that videographers use (he goes to film school).
He shot most of this roll indoor with the LED light and all of those are very underexposed. It doesn’t even look like he had an LED light.
He asked me what I thought the problem was, but I have no idea. Anyone else have any ideas as to why those images came out so underexposed?

I get the Holga camera has limitations. I advised my friend to get a flash for it, but he insisted his LED would be good enough. How can i explain to him that he needs a flash in order to get properly exposed, in focus picture of people?
Everyone is correct in their answer, but I will put it in real world numbers for you.
I also have a Holga 120 and an LED light source, as well as an external, hand held light meter. My LED light is one of those 130 LED units that is blinding if you look directly into it. It is a great VIDEO light, but for still photography, it is still not enough light. I’m betting your friend’s light is even less powerful than mine.
At any rate, with my LED on it’s maximum power and using my light meter set at ISO 400, the reading at only 5 feet is 1/2 second at f11. Why f11 you ask? Because that is the ONLY aperture value the Holga has. Forget the cloudy / sunny switch that is “supposed” to make the aperture f8. It does NOTHING. The aperture is always on f11. So, as shown by the light meter, to get proper exposure with my strong LED light at only 5 feet, you will need a shutter speed of ONE HALF second. The Holga has ONE shutter speed of 1/125. So you see, that is a LONG way from 1/2 second. The only way to try to get photos with the LED source is to mount the Holga on a tripod, set the shutter to the B, (bulb), mode, and use a remote cable shutter release to hold the shutter open for aprx. 1/2 second to one second.
Perhaps those “hard” numbers will convince your friend that his LED light is NOT going to work with a Holga, except as I stated above on a tripod on Bulb setting.
I preach on here all the time that these toy cameras, such as the Holga, require much MORE skill and photographic knowledge to get good, consistent results from them.
