Hemianthus Callitrichoides?
Greetings!
From various sources on the web most people suggested ‘medium to strong light’ to grow a hemianthus carpet.
Considering the 2 watts / gallon formula for a 24 gallon tank will 50 watts be suffice or is the 2 watts / gallon the minimum requirement for a tank, in other words ‘weak light’?
Can anyone with successful experience with hemianthus suggest a sufficient wattage for a 24 gallon with hemianthus?
Also which light is more effective T5 or T8?
Oh! and when I went to the store today the sales clerk was obsessed on selling me those new Arcadia LED lights but has anyone tried them?
Cool looking and pricey but made me wonder how efficient source of light they were for plants.

Ok, watt per gallon is not accurate, as there are more efficient bulb and less efficient bulbs. 50 watts of an incandescent light bulb is not the same as 50 watts from a high output T5.
For a 24 gallon tank, 50 watts+/- worth of T5 high output lighting should be adequate, and considered “medium”. The 24 inch fixtures have usually 24 watt T5 bulbs. You want at least 2 bulbs, but a 4 bulb fixture is much better. The 50 watt T5 or similar light fixture would be the low end of the light needed so go up from there. They will grow faster and do better with higher light, but can survive in medium light and still do well.
Either High output T5s or high output T8s are comparable (T rating is the diameter of the bulb). Compact Fluorescent are also very close on lumen output and similar lighting units to either. The high output T5s are some of my favorite fixtures as they are very efficient and usually fairly low heat.
Get a Kelvin rating of 6500-10000k on the bulbs (proper spectrum). There is debate on the exact importance of Kelvin ratings, but I have found the plants really do best under these warmer colored lighting.
Avoid the LED fixtures. They are not so great and very costly. They are totally not worth the price and not great for long term use (no replacement bulbs). I agree they are cool because they are so programmable and high tech, but fancier is not always better. We tested them out when the sales lady came by with a product demo and they did not perform even close to what the lady was advertising (check with several different light meters for performance compared to high output T5 and halide fixtures). I was not impressed at all, and refuse to carry them. I’d order one in if someone really had their heart set, but in my opinion they are currently a waste of money.
You’ll want to look into adding CO2 to the tank as they do best with some added.
It can be a tricky plant and without proper CO2 and light they just seem to melt/fade away to nothing.
