What do I need for a cheap 20 long saltwater tank?
I am new to saltwater and want to start a saltwater tank. I want to do a 20 long, that can eventually maybe have some coral or something, but not right away. I wanna just start with like a pair of clownfish and some inverts, or something.
I already have a 20 long tank, hood and light (that came with it), blue LED “moon lights,” a 100W Marineland Stealth Pro heater, and… uh… some aquarium sand and sea shells. Lol.
What do I need to make this happen, while keeping costs down? Also, what would you suggest to stock it with (that isn’t going to be a fortune)?
There are 2 types of saltwater tank. There are the FOWLR ( fish only with live rocks) and the other is the reef tank. The cost is lowest with FOWLR and move upward to a mix tank and finally the most expensive will be the reef tank.
So let target the FOWLR tank as it’s the cheapest. Things that’s import for this are tank, filtration, live rock and saltwater. You need about 1.2pound of live rock per gallon. You need a filtration that does 6 to 8 time your tank volume. And output that can move the water around at least for 90% of the tank space. Places that water has no movement (maybe it’s blocked or the pump is not strong enough) is call dead spot and waste, uneaten food, and other nasty stuff accumulate in these location. This place tends to be the first place to have algae outbreak and keep your nitrate high even when you do your water change frequently. If one filter doesn’t do that, you can use two filter or add an additional wave maker to help.
Setup the sand, place the live rocks add saltwater and then cycle it. You can google cycling of marine tank, much info out there.
Lastly, place your fish in. Remember to start slow and keep fish number very small in the beginning and you will do fine. Good luck.
