Is it possible to have a magnet touch anywhere on a metal panel so that it would turn a light on?
I know this is a perhaps a wierd question, but I’ve got an idea for an invention that depends on this working.
This is already done with touch lamps (I’ve even seen it lamps turn on by touching plant leaves) and touch screens, which I think involves electromagnetic forces.
I’ve checked out a book on electronics and am working to self-educate, but am hoping you folks might be able to help me get to the bottom line faster.
Can I use a metal plate as a conductor and have a neodymium magnet (instead of a finger) trigger a light connected to that plate when the magnet and plate connect?

Reed switches are likely to be what you’re looking for. These switches are either normally open (type “A”) or type “C” (common plus one normally open and other normally closed) which close (or change over) when near to a strong enough magnetic field. Forget about the metal plate. There’s no need for it, and can prove to be a drawback, instead.
Most of them sell for under $2. They’re compact, very reliable, and fairly sensitive, too. Just be careful not to exceed rated current hadling capacity. Some models can carry up to 1 A, but most should be operated with currents under 1/3 A. Among other applications, proximity sensors are built around them. It’s an item most electronic dealers usually carry. If you can’t locate them near you, try www.newark.com., or Jameco Electronics, www.jameco.com.
