can i grow most soft corals with T5 lighting?
i know pretty much all i need to know about taking care of a reef tank (i’ve bought a bunch of books and been reading them non-stop for the past 3 months) but i still do not understand what corals need what kind of lighting. i do not plan on ever having LPS or SPS corals
For just soft corals you could use either a HO T-5 or compact fluorescent. But here are a few other things you might want to consider too. You can go up to 2 years before you have to replace a T-5 bulb, but it’s recommended that you change power compacts at least once a year. And even if you have 2 bulbs that are the same wattage, the T-5 is tinner and each bulb [on a good lighting system anyways] will have its own reflector. All power compacts have 2 tubes side by side. So even at the same wattage, your corals will get more light from the T-5s.
I’ve run both on my saltwater tanks, and once I saw the difference in the quality of the light and how my corals [I have both soft and hard] look under them, I don’t think I’ll ever go back to power compacts.
If you’re at the point of looking at lighting systems, look at the lights by AquaticLife [they make both types of systems]. They have a built in timer so your white, actinic, and moonlight features can all be programmed separately, but it all runs off one cord with a normal-sized grounded plug. No more having to have separate timers for each or using an entire powerstrip just to run your lighting.
