the street lights in many cities contain bulbs filled with sodium vapor. When electrical energy is passed through the bulb, a brilliant light is given off. What is happening to sodium atoms to cause this?
The electricity excites (increases the level of) the electrons in the lamp, and when the electrons return to their natural levels, they give off light (a photon).
