Whats the fastest way to grow aquarium algae?
I need it for my oto (catfish).
The fastest way to grow aquarium algae is to do it outside of the main tank.
You will need:
A bucket never exposed to soap, or another similar container
Several aquarium-safe rocks, which you should be able to find at a pet store.
A window that gets a lot of sunlight, or a warm place outside that gets a lot of sunlight
Dechlorinated water
A bit of fish food
Just fill the bucket with dechlorinated water, put the rocks in, put it in the place with lots natural sunlight, and add a little bit of fish food as a source of Ammonia. Algae should grow on the rocks quickly in this setup. When you have a good amount of algae on a rock, take it out of the bucket and put it in the tank with the Otos for the Otos to graze on. When they are done, replace it with another algae-covered rock and put the original one back in the bucket to grow more algae.
This way your Otos get enough algae, but you can grow it more quickly than in a tank and your tank will never look bad while you’re growing it.
In the meantime, they will eat Zucchini once they’ve realized what it is, and it is as healthy for them as algae. Just cut a medallion piece or strip, peel it (no fish will eat the rind), and attach it to the side of the glass near where the Otos hang out with an aquarium safe veggie clip, which you can get at a pet store. Leave it in there for between 24-48 hours, because the Otos never get interested unless its been in there for at least 24 hours. Its important to take it out after 48 so it doesn’t start rotting and foul the water. I have Zucchini available to my Otos 24-7, it makes up about 1/2 of their diet, the other 1/2 is algae. It took about a week of various pieces being in there before they realized it was food, though. If you want, you can blanch it by boiling it for about 30 seconds to a minute, then putting it in once it is cool. You can also feed it raw. I highly recommend Zucchini over Cucumbers, Lettuce etc. because Otos will often never eat those other things, but almost always come around with Zucchini.
You can also try feeding Algae Wafers, if you can get your Otos to eat them.
