Why do coral reefs in Hawaii mostly grow on the northern islands?
70% of Hawaii coral reefs grow on the northern islands does anyone know why this occurs i know that the 10 atolls that make up the northern islands are newly formed and that they are protected but why is it that these reefs form so well here?

I think there are two ways to look at this. One considering human impacts and one ignoring them.
First of all, people, along with their influences such as the legal protection of the northern islands have really only been around for the blink of an eye from the corals perspective. Coral grows on such a extreme time span, our influences have not been around long enough to dictate where their large formations exist. The reason why much of the coral reefs in Hawaii are in the northern islands is because those islands have been around so much longer, coral has had the time to develop extremely large reefs. If you know anything about Hawaiian geology you know that each island heading towards the southeast is progressively younger with the big island being the youngest (still erupting). Millions of years ago the northwest Hawaiian atolls were islands like the main Hawaiian islands, developing reefs along their coastlines. As the coasts eroded, the reefs continually grow and eventually you have an atoll that is nearly entirely reef. If you look at the big island, the coastlines are very rugged and undeveloped, and coral reefs have had very little time to establish. It is the same reason why there is more white sand beaches on each older island. Kauai has more white sand beaches (and larger reefs) than Oahu which has more than Maui which has more than the Big Island. I guess that’s just a really long way of saying the northern islands are older, hence more reef has grown.
However, human influence, although short lived, has been drastic. We may not have much influence promoting coral growth but we have had a lot of influence on coral destruction. Although the few decades of legal protection of the northwest Hawaiian islands is not nearly long enough for coral to expand, you can compare it to the frequently degraded ecosystems in the main islands. The living reefs on the main islands have been nearly wiped out (case in point, Anini reef on Kauai, the only barrier reef in the country, is now a large dead mass due to coastal development and golf course runoff). Looking to the future, reef growth will likely only take place in the protected areas of the state because the more accessible public areas have already been so badly degraded, it is unlikely they will ever be able to expand.
