Is a ballast required for HPS bulbs?
I am growing plants indoors and I would like to set up either a metal halide bulb or a high pressure sodium bulb. i understand that to ignite the gases in these bulbs you need the special ballast although i did not want to spend the money on all that. So could i just plug it into a lamp?
not just a ballast, you need a lighting unit that also contains a capacitor and a starter. these are the component of a HID lamp(metal halide, high pressure and low pressure sodium). you have to buy a unit that has all of these already in them, you can not build your own and you can buy one through gardening supply places or the internet.
