220v to 120v converter and 120v surge protector tripping the breaker. Is the converter bad?
I live in Germany, and I’m trying to connect a 110v surge protector into a 220v-110v. The problem is every time I do… the lights go out.
It only happens when I plug in the surge protector, even if it is off. I had the same converter and surge protector set up earlier today at another location, and it had been working there problem free for 6 months.
Today we moved, and when I went to plug in the converter…
no problem… I plugged in the surge protector and… lights out.
Is the converter bad? I checked it’s fuse and it looks ok.
SOunds like the surge protector may be fried. A fuse not being blown doesn’t mean much, only that you did not draw excessive current.
Surge protectors work by shunting any voltage over 110 to neutral. They use a semiconductor device called a varistor to do that. Your varistor may be fried. It would be difficult to tell this from the outside; often fried semiconductors look the same as healthy ones. Of course, charring is a bad sign….
Is it on a GFI ? Was it before ?
Even if it is now on a GFI and it was not before and moving it to a non-GFI does not blow the breaker, I would still replace it, because it is leaking current and could electrocute someone.
Could there be moisture in the surge protector ?
I assume that your ‘converter’ is a transformer. THat will tend to limit surges.
You can protect yourself with a surge protector upstream of the transformer, ie, a German 220V one; you don’t need to send to the US for a 110V one.
