Can’t a Fluorescent lamps brightness be controlled this way?
I had this idea of a moving filament inside the tube. If you want higher brightness the filament will move apart from the other side. If you want less brightness it moves nearer. Starter won’t be needed as the tube will start to glow with lower voltages and then the filament can be moved farther away.
The basic idea is to vary the area of the lamp which glows to control brightness.

I have a 2 ways to reduce costs.
1) Have 3-4 electrodes inbetween at varying distances and use one of them at a time.
2) Hang two threads from the end where the electrode is moving. By pulling one of the two, users can vary the distance between the electrodes and hence the area which glows.
(these brightness controls can be automated though)
You can replace the word filament with electrode i meant the same.
It would probably work, but it would also probably be prohibitively expensive to make a fluorescent tube with a moving part inside of it. Fluorescent dimmers already exist, anyway.
