Can you change visible light spectrum with colored glass?
Basically, can I take white light-bulbs and, using a piece of colored glass. Change the light output from the bulb. I am using a halogen lamp for growing plants and need more of the blue spectrum for a while/season. Is this what basically LED lights are? White light covered in a colored glass or whatever bulb?
You are asking two different things here – changing the spectrum and changing the light output.
Light spectra are measured in nm of wavelength, or a combination of multiple nm if there is more than one color such as white light from a halogen bulb. Light output is measured as light energy, measured in lumens or sometimes other units.
If you place a blue filter (such as colored glass) in colored light, the filter will serve to absorb all colors other than its own. So if you place a blue filter in front of a white light bulb, the result will be only blue light coming from the filter, as the other colors will be absorbed by the filter. The total lumens will be reduced, and only light in the range of 450-490 nm will be transmitted through the filter.
If you want to maximize the amount of lumens of blue light emitted from a light bulb on a per watt input basis, then your best bet would be blue LED lights. The color of an LED is determined by energy gap of the semiconductor, with the electroluminescence corresponding to the energy of the photon.
