LED or T5 for reef tank?
Help i am trying to deside on the wave maker light or a led light t5 you have to change out Lot how much do they cost withch is best led last longer but are expencive for reef tank
The LEDs “last longer” in that the bulbs last longer, but when that bulb does go out in 5-10 years, you are out of a fixture. Last I checked the LED manufacturers are not making replacement bulbs or even having that as an option to their fixtures. Once that bulb goes, it is gone! They might repair the light in the first few years, but you have to ship the entire thing back to them to do that! I’ve talked about it in length to the sales rep that tried to get us to carry these in our store.
Compare the price over 5 years (the LED lights usually only have a warranty for that long, if even that, so expect something to go wrong within 5 years of owning it) by looking at the price of LED light compared to the price of T5 light plus replacement bulbs every year and decide which works better for you. Power consumption can be another cost factor, but T5s are pretty efficient and the power issue is more over the LEDs vs. halides.
The LED lights are really cool, and I love how you can program them to change the light over time (have a sunrise, sunset, etc) but that doesn’t seem to make a big difference in the tank and is more something to show your friends.
