Will an oven wire power a small garage?
I just bought a house and the garage only had 110v in it. So now i want to run 220v to it, but i don’t want to have to run wire all the way to the fuse box in the house. There is a 220v outlet behind the stove that I don’t use because it is gas. So could i take the outlet out and extend the wire to the barn? Will the amperage be correct? Would the washer/dryer outlet be better because that is also ran on gas. The garage will have 8 8ft fluorescent lights, 4 4ft fluorescent lights, a garage door, an outside fluorescent light, a small air compressor, and possibly some drills and other small tools. Also, will well wire work?
No. This is against the National Electrical Code. You will have to install a”sub-panel” in the garage. To keep the codes satisfied, you “SHALL” (NEC) separate the neutral and the ground. This means you have to run four wires to the garage: two hots, one neutral and one ground. It can not be smaller than a 100 amp feed. Your range receptacle is rated at 50 amps. One more code violation would be that “the disconnecting means shall be readily accessible”. Your range in front of the receptacle makes it “readily inaccessible”.
