Lighting: High Pressure Sodium vs. Mercury?
Hi There!
I am a novice. It appears high pressure sodium lights produce more lumens than mercury vapor, fluorescents, and other kinds of bulbs.
For example, it appears a 400 watt mercury vapor produces around 6,000 lumens. But a 400 watt HPS appears to produce 45,000 lumens.
Am I missing something? Are there other kinds of bulbs that produce even more lumens-per-watt than HPS?

The reason the HPS outputs 45k is because it needs to be at least 5 feet away from the plants. The further you move the light source from the target, the weaker the light received becomes. So 45k lumens is most likely at the 1 foot level, which would fry any plant.
Fluorescent, though less in lumens, can be kept within 1 inch of the plant. Use tubes, 2 foot or 4 foot, not spirals. Use a closed grow box with a ventilation fan (computer case fan is good enough).
