Why does the choke of my 250 Watt security lamp get bad so frequently?
The light fitting comprises a 250 Watt choke, a capacitor, an igniter unit, and a 250 Watt metal halide lamp.
The frequency of change of defective/burnt choke is, on the average, once every 2 months.
Chokes don’t like heat, but I suspect something more. There’s a charging circuit, the choke acts like a filter for the storage battery. The charging circuit is pulsing the battery. This pulsing is killing the choke, but without it it will cause damage to the battery and/or the light.
You will want to increase the ampacity of the choke, but keep the same mH value if you can.
