Having electrical brownout problem in bedroom–likely causes?
I’m having a problem with the electricity to a bedroom browning out, no matter how small the power load it has (even one fluorescent light bulb!). It started two weeks ago with just an occasional flickering of the ceiling light, but has since gotten very severe. I replaced the 20A breaker today with no luck. I had this problem 3 years ago and traced it to a burned out breaker–too much load from the AC, dorm fridge, TV, game systems, etc. I fixed it, got rid of the AC and fridge, and all was fine. What might be causing this problem now?
The bedroom has its own ciruit. It doesn’t share power with any other room. There are 6 plug outlets and two overhead light switches (one light, one fan). All look to be in good condition. All are experiencing brown out.
I traced the bedroom wiring in the cellar and found a spot on it that had damage to the covering. Could that be causing the brownout even though that part of the wire isn’t touching anything? How should it be repaired?
a) loose connection in an outlet somewhere. Look for wires that are “stabbed” into the back of the outlet instead of the wire being wrapped around the screw.
b) since you’ve replaced the breaker before, I would look at the bus-bar where the breaker snaps into and draws it’s power from. If it looks burned, or PITTED, you may have problems that only a pro can solve.
