Best Light bulbs for indoor plants?
I will be growing some indoor plants inside during the winter time this year. I live in PA, so there is not too much sunlight in the winter. I plan to grow lettuce, lavender, echinacea, and a few more tropical/semi-tropical plants. Which wattage of fluorescent bulb would I need for these plants and how far from the tops of the plants should the light bulb be placed?
I was looking at the Sylvania Gro-Lux Wide Spectrum Rapid Start Fluorescent light bulbs at 40 watts and a light output of 1,700 lumens. Is this appropriate for my situation? My area will be about 6 ft. x 3 ft. big. The lights would have to be installed in the ceiling (like the fluorescent lights in an office building ceiling)
hes right you dont need fancy “grow” lights, just go with a couple 4 foot fixtures with two bulbs per fixture. Two will probably be enough for what you need, total of 4 bulbs. cool white works or they might have daylight bulbs which produce a more blue light, great for veg growth. With tube type lights you can get super close to the canopy (1 inch) I have mixed bulbs before using 26 watt spiral daylight bulbs and cool white tubes giving good results. If you decide to go with HPS or MH fixtures heat becomes an issue, for a small area like yours i wouldnt suggest these unless you have good ventilation and air circulation.
