Planted aquarium lighting…help please!?
I haven’t had a look at the aquarium we’re picking up used, but I ‘m assuming I’ll have to upgrade lots of things including the lights, especially to grow live plants. I’ve been reading and I understand that I will need in the neighbourhood of 200 watts of light for the size of my tank (100 gals.) and types of plants I want to grow (a mix of low and medium light-lovers). I’ve been looking at aquarium lighting online, just to get some ideas of what the cost will be, but there aren’t any 200 watt full spectrum light bulbs (that I’ve seen, maybe I’m looking in the wrong places) — all I can find is 20 and 30 and a few 40 watt bulbs. I know there’s a way to do this right – help! If this is anything like a regular planting project, one doesn’t want 4 50 watt bulbs to equal 200 watts, one wants each bulb to have the correct wattage… right…?? The tank is only 6 feet long, not sure how many spots for bulbs in hood… but at any rate, help is greatly appreciated!
it isn’t always about the wattage.
i have a 90 gallon that is only 4 feet but is 2 feet deep.
i’m using a double bent tube arrangement that has 65 watts in each bulb but produces the light of 4 four foot bulbs.
because of the depth i need it bright for growing plants but i also fertilize weekly,have a Co2 system and an under strength filter so as not to knock all of the Co2 out as i want it for the plants.
the plants are doing phenomenal .but the point is that it is more than just the light.
your tank being 6 feet long will be about 18 inches deep . there are some excellent T5 lighting systems out nowadays and i can recommend you look into those.
corallife makes some excellent double T5 lights that match a full specrum bulb with a 6500k bulb for max plant benifits.
