How to stop plants from turning pale?
I have a 5 gallon tank with four Pseudomugil gertrudae, two algae-eating shrimp, and a few Malaysian trumpet snails and a multitude of plants. The crypts (2), Java fern (3), Java moss, and watersprite are doing well, but the two microswords I bought are turning increasingly pale. I have two fluorescent lights on the tank, a 15W plant light and a 15W full spectrum, use Black Onyx sand for a substrate (made for plants) and add just a little Kent Botanica “Grow” once a week. What can I do to get the microswords back to the dark green they were when I bought them?
The 30W/gallon does seem a little high, but with the water sprite foating on the top, this is what I needed to give the plants that are rooted in the sand enough light. I’d rather not add anything with nitrate because I don’t want algae if I add too much. And shouldn’t the fish, shrimp, and snails add this?
The lights are canopy lights for an aquarium.
The conditions in your tank won’t provide what that plant needs….
you have 3 excellent low light plants that love your existing set up.
15 watt light has very little intensity, i don’t know if your using a canopy or desk lamps to light this tank.
try this……take a desk lamp and put a 26watt GE daytime sprial in it.
I putt 2 over a 10 gallon and with restrike had maybe 3 wpg but man was that bright.
that will putt out 5 times the light (lumens actually) of watt you have now at less than double the wattage,
Intensity is far more important than watts….
your realistically running about 1.5 wpg.
you have a great set up for a low light tank..onyx sand is great but it’s weird stuff as it has 10% the iron content flourite has but 50 times the magnesium.
why i don;t know but this sand is weird
anyways you have put a high light plant in a low light set up where it won’t survive…..
you can’t mix plants like that without changing the set up..
see light is the plants gas pedal, as you give it more light it needs more food as its growing faster.
plant food is CO2
your kent fert is like plant vitamins to keep it in shape to use the co2
all those other plants are happy with the co2 naturally in the water but the sword won’t be as happy. It needs more light, thus more CO2.
besides putting a carpeting plant in a 5 gallon is crazy, the root system is crazy and the draw on nutrients is massive compared the the other plants you have in there..everything would choke out.
I have one crypt in a ten gallon with a root system so intrenched that i can pull all the flourite out in that tank just by lifting this plant up.
the problem is trying to fix the sword will make everything else go
haywire……….
sounds like a great set-up but keep the plants in the same care bracket or stuff like this happens…
if you try and dose with CO2, well enjoy the perils of instable co2 injection if you go DIY..
put these tanks are made to be enjoyed…..
just rip it out so it doesn’t decay and pollute your water…
