How do I get “rusty” screw out?
I’m tryint to replace the right headlight bulb in a 97 mitsubishi eclipse and I need to remove the air filter compartment’s base. I managed to unscrew 2/3 screws. What was supposed to be an easy, half hour job just turned into hell! I sprayed WD 40 on it and loosened it up. I was able to get the screw maybe about halfway with a wrench ratchet but now the screw has nearly no grip on it for the ratchet. I tried a screw driver but now the slot for the phillips head is “deteriorating” so it seems like a screw driver will no longer work. What do I do now? Thanks.
I should have mention I tried vice grips. Maybe they didnt work because the WD 40 was still on the screw and couldnt grip well? There really isnt a lot of space because the screw is in the air filter compartment. I’ll try the vice grips again in the morning.
I have tremendous luck sears craftsman “screw extractors”. Use with your electric drill and they “catch” in the stripped head and help back it out.
A similar product called “bolt out” works incredibly well too for when this happens with bolts.
An alternative method is to take a socket just barely smaller than the screw head and force it over the screw head and back it out with a ratchet.
In extreme cases, I weld a nut onto the stubborn part and just wrench it off.
