Can my new aquarium light support plant life?
I just bought a new light for my aquarium and I do not know anything about aquairum lights. It says that it is 30 LED and is 1.8W is that good enough to grow aquarium plants or do i need to buy another? what would be a sufficently strong enough light to grow low/mid/high level aquarium plants
Also it’s for a fresh water tank
1.8w LED lighting system isnt good enough for any size planted aquarium. the amount fo wattage really depends on your aquarium. LED lighting system are made for the use of planted aquarium or reef aquariums as they arent made to produce high light penetration as well as high wattage. the main goal of LED lighting is to produce long lasting, energy efficient lighting. for low light aquarium plants your basically looking at 3w per gallon, mid level aquairum plants is 3-5 and high is 4-6. in order to get these watt per gallon numbers you must buy a special lighting fixture as simply changing th bulb on a standard lighting system wont change anything. what you need to do is go to your local pet store and buy a lighting fixture for your size aquarium or go online and search ebay, craigslist or go aquarium specialty stores such as:

these are two very reliable and safe sites that i have purchased from in the past.
on my new 55 gallon reef i have a 500w metal halide with lunar LEDS giving 9w per gallon causing my coral to grow like fire
on my 90 gallon reef i have a 750w metal halide with T-5 and LEDS giving 8w per gallon, this is a 4 year old reef system with very healthy and prisitine corals
my 30 gallon reef has a standard soft coral lighting system giving only 130w per gallon which is 4w per gallon which is suffeicent enough for soft corals
my 55 gallon FOWLR has a standard T-5 lighting system giving only 180w which is 3w per gallon not enough for corals but enough for coralline algae to grow.
