Managing algae in a ten gallon tank with goldfish?
I currently have a ten gallon tank with an under-gravel filter setup, along with three comet goldfish from 2 to 2 and a half inches long, an air pump with air stones, three artificial plants, a fake log, and a fluorescent lamp. Brown algae grows on the filter tubes, aquarium glass, plant leaves, and log. I leave the lamp on eight hours a day, so I suspect the algae is caused by the nutrients supplied by excess fish food. I want to manage the algae with a live solution, such as snails or shrimp. Feedback would be appreciated, such as what algae eaters/scavengers would be able to coexist with goldfish without being eaten, how many for a ten gallon tank with three fish, and so on. Thanks!
No, the algae is being supplied nutrients by the fish themselves. 3 comet goldfish overstock a 10 gallon aquarium. A well cared for comet goldfish can get over 16 inches in length, and produce a lot of waste (ammonia). They are best kept as pond fish for this reason.
I would not add any algae eaters. They will add more to the bioload of the aquarium and may result in health problems for your fish.
Clean out all the algae you can. It should wipe off fairly easily, and keep the light off unless you’re looking at the fish. The light you keep on for 8 hours a day is the main thing that’s causing the algae to grow. Keep the light off and it should significantly reduce the algae.
I would strongly consider upgrading your aquarium size too. As these little guys grow, they will become stunted and die because they will outgrow the 10 gallon.
I know, gold fish are really cute, but there are other kinds that don’t get nearly as large.. they’re still too big for a 10 gallon, but they don’t require massive tanks like comets will.
