Aquarium bulb not working? Or aquarium hood?
Today I finally bought an aquarium hood for my tank. I also bought one bulb to go with it. I didn’t realize I needed two.
I screwed in one bulb and it doesn’t work. That’s when I realized two things:
1. The box on the hood says it requires 15 or 25 watt bulbs. Mine’s a 10.
2. The hood needs two bulbs.
So my question is this: Does the BULB not work? Do I need a 15 or 25 watt bulb to make it work? Does the HOOD not work? Or do I just need TWO bulbs?

1) The 15 or 25 watt bulbs are the maximum size that can be used because of fire hazard. A 10 watt will work, it will just give you less light. There could be a difference in the shape of the bulbs though. If your hood was meant for the shape that’s used in your house but you use a tubular shaped bulb for an aquarium, it might be too long. See what your instructions say, or if you don’t have them, look to see if there’s an online manual. Or maybe the box has picture of the lights inside the hood.
2) It should be easy to see if that bulb doesn’t work. Just find another light, like a desk light or table lamp you can put that bulb into. Or if it’s one of the clear tubular lights, see if the metal wire might be broken inside. If it is, it won’t work. Back when I used hoods like this, they would still work with just 1 bulb, but maybe as a safety feature that made it so that something had to be in both sockets so the light wouldn’t short out if it got wet. If the bulb seems to be okay, try buying another bulb so there are 2. Also, if you have them plugged into a power strip or a timer, make sure the power strip switch is on and the timer is set for the *on* part. Just some thoughts from the silly mistakes I’ve made in the past.
