How do I work out which lamp is the most efficient?
There a four types of electric lamps. Each lamp produces the same amount of light energy at the same time.
Lamp 1 – 100 watt filament lamp, Average Life= 1000 hours, Cost=£0.50
Lamp 2 – 20 watt energy saving lamp, Average Life = 10,000 hours, Cost = £3.00
Lamp 3 – 10 watt LED Spotlight, Average Life= 60 000 hours, Cost £30.00
Lamp 4 – 15 watt fluorescent tube, Average life= 5000 hours, Cost = £5.00
Also, which lamp will be the cheapest to run for 1000 hours?
Please show me how you work it out because this is just my personal revision for a test not homework.

The most efficient lamp uses the least amount of power
Lamp 3, the LED spotlight is the most efficient as it’s power consumption is the lowest
You can’t calculate this because you don’t know the cost of power (in kWh)
Cost of each lamp per hour of use is
lamp 1: 0.50 / 1000 = 0.0005
lamp 2: 3.00 / 10000 = 0.0003
lamp 3: 30 / 60000 = 0.0005
lamp 4: 5.00 / 5 000 = .001
so lamp 2 is cheapest by purchase price
If you allow 0.20 per kWh
convert watts to kW by dividing by 1000
now convert to kWh by multiplying by the time, 1000 hours
and multiply by the cost of 1 kWh
lamp 1: 100/1000 * 1000 * 0.20 = 20.00
lamp 2: 20/1000 * 1000 *0.20 = 4.00
lamp 3: 10 / 1000 * 1000 * 0.20 = 2.00
lamp 4: 15/1000 * 1000 * 0.20 = 3.00
