I want to install non IC 3″recessed lights in an unfinished basement with 3.5″QuiteZone Insulation. ??????
I purchased these “pot lights at the Home Depot. A pack of 6 non-IC lights. Floor Joists are 8″. Insullation is 3.5″QuiteZone, with very little Thermal capabillities. Non IC lights installed in Insullation calls for clearence of 3″ on any side of the cannister to avoid overheating and possible fire hazard. These lights have a small Junction box attached at the top of the cannister. If installed the way everything is now, the cannister will never contact the 3.5″ Insullation, but may contact the junction box at the top of the fixture. Given the type and depth of Insullation used and the fact that same will be the recommended 3″ away from the cannister, would I be “OK” with the insullation possiby touching the junction box? Could I Strap up the Insullation on top of the Junction Box to give another inch or so of clearence? OR is there another alternative beside buying new IC rated lights or metal cannister to surround the light fixture? Thanks in Advance!
There will probably be nothing wrong with installing the Non IC cans. But just for precaution, I would make as much room for the fixture as possible so if you are able to strap up the insulation, I would.
