I have a metal halide light fixture and it keeps burning up the ballast and i need an alternative. Any ideas?
It’s a 175 watt bulb and ballast and its the second time it’s burnt out so i was wondering if a high pressure sodium or a mercury vapor bulb burns at a lower temp. Any one got any ideas as to what i can do?
It seems to me that the ballast may not be getting sufficient cooling air. It may be in the ceiling or wall space or in the sun, getting very hot ambient air during the day time, or maybe it just has a restricted air flow. The ballast is usually mounted on a metal plate for safety reasons, and this is also useful as a heat radiator.
There is not much difference with the other lamp types, they are all mercury vapour lamps just as the metal halide lamp, with different approaches to getting a different spectrum or efficiency. The metal halide uses fluorescent coatings mostly.
Another possibility is the electrical rating, such as voltage, possibly frequency. Look up the detailed specifications to find the ambient temperature rating, voltage, frequency. If it has an electronic ballast it may be failing due to voltage spikes on the mains. In this case run it through a power board with surge protection, to give some added insurance.
Failure of electrical components is due to environment – the electrical and temperature environments must remain within specification always. Other issues are water or chemicals getting in, or vermin, even ants. If the lamp is poor quality a different supplier might be what you need, which is something you are hinting at already.
