Can I run a 120v appliance on a 110v outlet?
I have a steamer (for getting wrinkles out of clothes). On its label is says “120V” and “1300W”. At the current home, I plug it into a regular outlet (I’m guessing it’s a standard 110v outlet). The steamer works fine, but if there are lights on, the lights often dim.
I’m getting a new home where I can add outlets, the choices are:
(1) 110V on exisiting circuit
(2) 110V on dedicated circuit
(3) 20 Amp on dedicated circuit
Which one do I need to properly run this applicance without the “light dimming” affect? I’m guessing the light dimming is caused by too much power being consumed at the same time on the same circuit. Or is it because the 120v is not suppose to run on the 110v and should be run on a 20 amp circuit?
This appliance will run on either 110V or 120V. Since it is rated at 1300W, that is 11.8A at 110V. rating at 120V means the appliance will not be damaged by power peaks. If you have a dedicated circuit for the steamer, this would be your best scenario. Most line current if checked at the socket comes out to be about 116V because the power company must maintain it within 5%. 20A is a standard 12G wired circuit. Good solid construction.
