Can I fit a 70W high pressure sodium bulb in an 80W mercury vapour lamp?
I want to do this for efficiency reasons, I would get a lot more light out of a high pressure sodium bulb than a mercury vapour bulb and there would be slightly reduced power consumption too.
I’m wondering if I could get away with fitting a 70W high pressure sodium bulb with internal ignitor into a fitting containing an 80W mercury vapour ballast without having to do any modifications.
I’ve checked voltage and current used by both the existing bulb I have (mercury vapour) and the one I want to purchase (high pressure sodium) and they are somewhat similar, the line voltage is 240 and I don’t know if that makes any difference.
Mercury vapour: 115V 0.80A
High pressure sodium: 90V 0.98A

No it won’t work.
Discharge control gear is made specifically for each type of lamp.
Do you realise that the output colour of the sodium lamp is yellowish compared to white output from mercury lamps.
