Do i leave the lights in my fish tank on through out the night for the fish?
No. Almost all aquarium fish need healthy amounts of both light and darkness just like in nature.
An irregular lighting schedule can increase stress levels in your fish. For consistent lighting I recommend getting an appliance timer ( like http://www.jr.com/intermatic/pe/IN_TN111C/ ) and setting it to turn the tank light on and off automatically every 12 hours or so.
I try to set mine to turn on sometime after sunup and turn off sometime before sundown so the lighting changes come more smoothly, but that’s just me.
