Which puts out more heat: 400 watt metal halide, or 400 watt high pressure sodium?

They both use the same amount of electricty, but the metal halide is slighty more effecint. The metal halide is a new technology. The high pressure sodium will give off a yellowish light, and the metal halide will give off a white light. Most people like the white light more, so metal halide is much more common on todays installations.
Both lighting types take about 60 seconds before they acctually get very bright. After about 5 mins they will be at maximum brightness.
The only downside to metal halide is the ‘restrike time’. If light lights get turned off for some reason, there will be a delay before they come back on. These lights get very very hot, and need to cool down for about 10 minutes before the lamp will ‘restrike’ turn back on.
Metal halide would not be a good choice for a patio or garage or any area where you would need to turn the light on and off often. But they work great for parking lots, security lights, etc.
