Basking light fixture is pretty hot.Its a regular home depot style fixture.plastic and metal not porcelian.?
The fixture is rated 150 watts. My basking bulb is 75 watts. The actual connector from the light to the clamp(hard to explain) is hot to the touch. It is not touchable more than 2 seconds. It is NOT the clamp itself but the part where you adjust the clamp. Hope I’m making sense……Should I spend $ on a better porcelain one or is the cheapo one ok with only 75 watts. I do not need a fire especially because it’s in my daughters room. The outside plastic part of the socket is warm but it’s the metal clamp that’s hot as hell worrying me. The reflector is warm. I think that’s fine. anyone use a cheaper light fixture like this and is the heat ok?
I’ve had good and bad luck with this sort of fixture. I’ve never had a fire, but have had multiple bulb explosions and some smoke. You’re okay as far as wattage, definitely don’t exceed the rating of the lamp. As far as the lamp itself, if it’s not designed for high temps you may have some trouble, but the 75 watt bulb should be okay. I know which part you’re talking about… I think you’re just getting a lot of heat from conduction.
I have found the porcelain ones to hold up better over their lifetimes. If you’re worried, take back your fixture and get a porcelain version.
