grow light question?????
i have a 400 watt grow light with a metal sheet attacthed to the top, its very bright. I dont feel heat from it unless im a couple inches away ( 2 ) they say to keep your plants at least 2 feet under it but i dont feel anything, the bulb is good and the metal sheet is reflecting the light downwards …. .is it not supposed to generate heat? will my plants be ok?

We use 12 40 watt grow lights in 4 12 ft square areas. Are you sure it is 400 watt? We agree with Trish in that heat from the bulb is not a factor. We keep our plants 2 – 4″ away from the lights. As they grow we raise the lights to keep them that distance away. If you put it 2 feet away, you’ll end up with tall spindly plants. We keep the garage where the grow lights are between 45 and 55 degrees. It helps the plants grow stockier, thicker stems. In our 40+ years of gardening, we have never heard of a 400 watt grow light. If it is 400 watt and the manufacturer says keep them 2′ below it, we suggest you follow their instructions, if the plants do not grow right, you have recourse to get money back from the manufacturer. Check the bulbs, the wattage should be imprinted somewhere on it. If the bulb is 4′ long, it is probably 40 watt. Sorry 400 watt is way too expensive for us to run. 400 watts x 12 hours = 4.8 kilowatt hrs. Don’t know what you’re paying for electric. We’ll stick with the ones we know. Much cheaper. I apologize for wasting your time with my answer. I cannot answer your question.
