200W bulb on 40W lamp?
My lamp says 40W Max… But I just bought a 200W bulb without realizing it. Is it safe to use it? If not, what would be the highest wattage bulb I could use? I need more light… My eyes are going bad.

There is usually a small safety factor built into the maximum Wattage limits, but to exceed those limits is literally playing with fire.
A new lamp will be much less expensive than a house fire.
