Growing Lillie’s, tulips and roses under hydroponic lights?
I have the full set up, tent, lights etc and wanted to grow flowers. Once they have grown and I cut them to put in a vase will they grow back straight away because I have the heat and light on 18 hours a day, every day?
Definitely not tulips. The flower once. Then the leaves gather energy for next year’s flower, and they must go through a winter dormancy before they will flower again. If you don’t live where there is winter, you’ll have to chill them – which can be tricky to do without them molding or rotting.
Lily flowers – depends on the type. Asiatic and oriental lilies are like tulips, in that they send up flowers stalks once a year. Doesn’t matter how much light you give them. Daylilies are short-lived flowers, each individual flower is only open for one day, but they produce profusely, so the plants are in bloom for weeks. Some dayliles are also considered “re-bloomers”, and will grow flower stalks several more times during the season (like the Stella d’oro, which is popular in commercial plantings because of their un-fussy nature, and long bloom period).
Most roses sold these days are re-bloomers, and will bloom from late spring through frost.
But I can’t imagine what you would gain from growing them under lights inside, as it would be a fussy and expensive venture, when at least 2 of the 3 you want to grow are profuse long-blooming flowers, and are really really easy if you simply grow them outside.
