Do i have to have my metal hallide lamp on all 12 hours a day?
i have a marine reef aquarium and i wanted to have a go now at keeping some hard corals i purchased the metal halide lighting a few days ago but it burns to much electricity to keep on 12 hours a day so can i have flourescents on early morning and at night and just have the halide on during the main hours 12am 1pm 2pm 3pm & 4pm or will this affect the hard corals growth?
The stoney corals you picked really need the MH to duplicate the twelve hours of tropical sun on a reef. Fluorescent lights will not contribute anything. T 5′s might work to replace an hour at the beginning and end of the day, but not save you much if any electricity.
There are new LED lights that are capable of sustaining corals. They produce light very efficiently so you would save a lot on electricity. They also run cooler so if you have to use a chiller, they would save you even more. The drawback is these lights are so new and experimental that you will have to pay a lot for them. The link below has them for $800 which is a good enough price they can’t keep them in stock. Depending on the size of your tank, you might need 4 – 6 of them.
