There are rice sized boney spikes comming out of my finger leather coral. What could that be?
I purchased this coral 3 weeks ago. It has been doing great. I have other leathers in the tank and they are doing great. 4 days ago it seemed to be shedding and i began to blow it off with a turkey baster on a daily basis. I noticed hundreds of these rice sized boney spikes comming out and falling on the rock below. My water chemistry is great. I have a 250 watt metal halide and 2 96 watt power compacts. Does anyone have a clue what this could be. I am worried it might be dying.
It sounds like what you are seeing are the spicules of the coral. Usually when they are falling off the coral it is dying (or at least that part of the coral is dying).
If you have a QT tank you may want to move it into that, give it good water flow and good water quality and hopefully you can save part of it. You could also try giving it a treatment in a coral dip solution (there are a few companies that make these like Seachem, TropicMarin and Kent Marine).
