Plant Grow Light from Seeds?
I am going to start growing plants from their seeds. I have pressed paper/cardboard egg cartons with water up enough to soak the water up to the soil. The soil is moist, but what type of light should I use? I was thinking about using a tall (5ft) lamp and aim the light to the plants. I am starting with some Black Eyed Susan and Coneflower seeds. What type of bulb should I use? Should I buy a natural or a full spectrum bulb? Also what wattage should I use? The pans are about 2×3 ft and hold about 21 seed spots, and I have 2 of the pans. I might add 2 more pan down the road. So should I use 1 bulb or get a longer fluorescent light and hang down or will the bulb work enough for what small scale growing I am doing? Also ow far away should I have the bulb?
Any advice is great, and please only answer if you really know the answer.
first your germinate them in the dark until seedlings appear. Then you will need one of those long floresant plant lights…dont know what wattage…ask home depot or your local plant nursery. Then place the bulb between 12-18 in above the seedings and keep adjusting as the plants grow to keep them that far above the plants. They make these lights fixtures that are adjustable like that. The light bulb idea you have is not enough light for that and it needs to be more direct. You will need a fan that blows back and forth on low to make them strong enough to handle the wind outside so they wont be weaklings.
Also when you transplanting this spring….you need to hardening them off by taking them outside…still in containers, for an hour, the next day- two hours, day after -three hours until they are out there 8 hours a day. Then you transplant them. Also add some compost into the soil that you transplant them into.
before you plant make sure you have clean sanitized soil and that egg carton is clean otherwise you can get mold n the soil and that can kill off the seedlings or make them weak.
